Serial tech leaker @Eveleaks calls it quits

You may not have noticed yesterday that the Twitter account of one of the most prolific tech leakers in history fell silent. Evan Blass aka @evleaks has decided to announce his retirement from leaking out all the mobile tech news on the well-followed Twitter account. Evan Blass was very well known for leaking information about mobile tech on his Twitter profile @evleaks before the product was officially announced.

As of today, Evleaks has amassed over 186,000 followers on Twitter, using the social service to send out phone scoops almost daily. It was these 186,000 followers who found out first yesterday that Evleaks — whose real name is Evan Blass — would be giving up the game. Evan Blass was former Engadget and Pocket Lint writer and he built up a solid reputation for his accuracy.

While speaking to The Next Web in an interview, Blass has revealed financial problems to be the prime reason for him hanging his boots. He has revealed that in a quest to monetize what he was doing, he tried everything from sponsored tweets to launching his own website, but it somehow didn’t turn out as he would have wished it to. This is contributing towards an unsustainable living says Blass and it’s being worsened by the fact that he is suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Just to be clear, while some reports and comments today are pegging Blass as some kind of tech superhero, he most certainly wasn't. Evleaks got things wrong, a lot of the time, but what made him a good source was the fact that he put so many leaks out there and when he was wrong he often admitted it. His strike rate was good and the quality of the leaked images he posted meant that he could be relied upon for the inside track when it came to the mobile world.

Again, like some reports are hinting today, the well is not dry and Evleaks was not the be all and end all of the mobile world. So, while Mr. Blass will be missed, in the ever moving world of smartphones and tablets he will be quickly replaced. All that is left is the reason why Evleaks is coming to an end.
