Intel MICA is a fashionable smart cuff just for women, launches for $495

Intel and Opening Ceremony took to New York on Monday to show off MICA -- OC's latest wearable. The goal of the MICA bracelet, or "My Intelligent Communication Accessory" for long, is to make available a wearable that prioritizes form as high as function.

And, depending on your tastes, the mission was a success. Intel and Opening Ceremony happily admit the smart bracelet is geared towards women. Though unlike some companies that target the fairer sex by simply offering a pink option, OC had a hand in the device's creation to make sure it met their standards.

MICA owners can expect up to two days of battery life. The device costs $495 and launches early December.

The MICA bracelet, if nothing else, eye-catching. Opening Ceremony commented at Intel's event Monday on the importance of looks. "The screen has to be curved," claimed the company, "it needs to use metal, it needs to have precious stones."

The bracelet comes in any color you want, as long as it's white or black. On one side wearers get their shiny stones and materials while on the other is the curved screen. Many of the folks wearing the bracelet in the event hall wore the MICA bracelet with the screen on the inside. Providing the maximum amount of subtlety.

And that's exactly what MICA gets right. Apple taught the tech industry back in the 2000s the importance of physical design with its desktops and mobile devices. Well many companies quickly learned the lesson, we still see wearables that do nothing to consider appearance. But when dealing with something on your body, you have to at least look kind of good. If a wearable gadget isn't going to blend in and look like something you'd wear on wrists, at the very least don't stand out for the wrong reasons.

The MICA is a beautiful product. While the wearable that needs no phone to tether to is ambitious, we can't say we're excited to possibly pay another data plan after two years for a device that won't echo my phone's texts. It gives off similar to vibes to the first time seeing the Moto 360 -- a product we're used to seeing that has much broader capabilities tucked within. Let's hope more wearable tech moves in this direction.
