Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus Review and Specification

The Indian market has recently been treated to a number of octa-core smartphones running on the MediaTek MT6592 chip. The Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus, which we’re reviewing today, is one of the most awaited out of all of them. The device had been unveiled some months ago, but Karbonn took quite some time in bringing it into the market. But it’s out and as usual, we took it for a spin. Here’s what we thought of it.

Display :  Display of  Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus wasn’t a highlight of this device. The LTPS display of Karbonn Titanium Hexa launched today was definitely better and more vibrant as compared to the 5 inch full HD IPS LCD display of Titanium Octane Plus. Karbonn has also not specified any protection on the display. Karbonn mentioned a self healing coating on the back panel for resistance against minor scratches.

Design :  It features a plastic body design, with rubberized finish back cover. The plastic is of good quality and certainly feels much better than Karbonn Titanium Octane, its trimmed down variant and feels lot more plastic-ky. Weight seems well balanced and the device felt comfortable to hold in one hand.

Camera : The camera on the Octane Plus might be able to capture 16-megapixel photos, but the camera app only offers options up to 12 megapixels. Either way, quality is a severe disappointment. No matter how much light we threw at it, the Octane Plus gave us dull, grainy results. Shots were below par even outdoors in the middle of the day - only close-ups seemed to come out relatively okay. The camera app is quite basic but there are a few creative modes - multi angle, panorama, beauty shot, burst, and live photo (which actually creates short video clips).

Performance : Like many other octa-core smartphones in the market, this one also sports the MediaTek MT6592 processor clocked at 1.7 GHz along with the Mali 450MP4 GPU. This is the same processor as the one in the Micromax Canvas Knight and Panasonic P81, both of which are over Rs. 4,000 more expensive than the Octane Plus. The Titanium Octane Plus runs stock Android, which should have, theoretically, reduced the amount of lag on the smartphone. However, this is not true for the Octane Plus and its laggy interface. The experience was also below expectations when playing games like Asphalt 8 and Dead Trigger 2, which were hit by low frame-rates. The device also started heating up within five minutes of gameplay.

Battery : The battery disappointed us, considering its decent capacity. We managed only 4 hours, 53 minutes of continuous video in our test before the phone died. Call quality was acceptable. Overall, the performance is average, and we expected a lot more out of this device.
