Hackers tells Carmakers to protect cars from cyber attacks

A group of hackers and security professionals ask the automakers to improve vehicle security to ensure that cars will be protected from cyber attacks.

The I am the Cavalry group gathered signatures at the Las Vegas’ Def Con conference this weekend to urge the automotive industry to employ basic measures and guidelines to address security concerns on cars particularly when it comes to cyber attacks.

Modern vehicles depend on tiny computers to run everything in a vehicle – from engines and brakes to windshield wipers, air conditioning and others.

The group presented a list of requirements for auto manufacturers to protect vehicles from security breaches. The list include secure updates of software, mandatory testing of the digital tools, responsible disclosure program so researchers can safely disclose vulnerabilities in the software of the car, division on the different functions inside the car’s internal networks, and installation of a black box in every model.

Security experts said it will not take long before hackers are able to exploit software glitches and other vulnerabilities in vehicles.
