Google Glass creator leaves Google for Amazon

Babak Parviz, the Google executive behind the development of Google Glass, has left the search giant to join Amazon. He announced his departure from Google in a Google Plus post this weekend.

“status: super excited! :),” the post reads, with a picture of Amazon’s logo beneath.

Parviz also updated his Google+ About info to reflect the move.

“I founded and led a few efforts at Google (among them, Google Glass and Google Contact Lenses are public so far :) prior to moving to Amazon and work on a few other things now…” the “Story” section now reads.

Amazon has recently pushed further into the hardware market with the Fire Phone, the retail and cloud giant's debut into the smartphone market. Amazon sets the device apart from its rivals by including a long-rumored 3D display, which gives the illusion that images on the screen have depth. The logical conclusion is that Amazon may have hired Parviz to extend this technology into wearable gear.

Parviz has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. In addition to being a prime contributor to the Google Glass project, Parviz was also in the midst of developing glucose-tracking contact lenses that would eliminate the need for diabetics to draw blood to measure glucose levels -- the lenses have sensors that detect glucose content in tears.

Parviz also teaches as an affiliate professor in the Electrical Engineering department at the University of Washington in Seattle, where Amazon is headquartered. On his faculty page, Parviz describes his interests as spanning “novel communication and computing paradigms, biotechnology, nano and micro technology, and photonics.”

Parviz had recently stepped aside from his Google Glass role, and was replaced by Ivy Ross, a former marketing executive with Art.com. Ross has an extensive fashion industry background.
