Nokia X Full Review and Specification
The Nokia X is the Finnish brand's big effort to make greater waves into the low, low end of the smartphone market – and it's enlisted the help of Android to make that happen. The Nokia X is a phone that comes with a fairly decent spec list for a phone that's coming in at €89 before tax (around £75, $120, AU$135) – we're talking a dual-core 1GHz processor from Qualcomm, 512MB of RAM, a 4-inch WVGA screen and a 1500mAh battery.
Display : The 4 inch display of Nokia X supports 480 x 800 resolution, which is quite low but similar to what other budget Android phones have. At times when pictures are viewed with 30- 40 per cent zoom the display will look pixelated. However, it has an IPS panel which provides great viewing angles. During the review process the colour saturation and contrast were good.
Performence : This phone isn’t the most cracking handset on the block, and if you’re used to a top-end device like the iPhone or latest Galaxy S, you’re going to notice sluggishness, especially when browsing media-rich content and websites, or even a homescreen with a lot of icons. But overall, the experience does alright with limited resources, and never manages to become genuinely frustrating.
In terms of the field of devices against which it competes (those in the $100 range off-contract), it’s much more of a standout, offering more than competent access to Facebook, the native web, Twitter and other Android standbys in a package that’s both slick and affordable.
The dual-sim Nokia X also offers the ability to change easily between networks, and it has tremendous stand-by battery life. You can have the thing idle for weeks at a time and it’ll still be ready to go when you need it, which is a key concern in markets where access to power might not always be possible. If you’re using the cellular network constantly, battery life dips quickly and falls far short of either the iPhone or any other flagship Android device, but for infrequent use, the Nokia X outperforms either.
One more really nice thing about the Nokia X: Notifications on the custom home screen, including a text-based summary. It’s something that’s still missing from stock Android, and it’s a welcome addition to this custom fork.
Camera : Nokia X has a 3-megapixel camera with fixed-focus lens. Picture quality is decent in well-lit conditions especially close up shots. One should not though expect amazing clicks or detailing in the pictures.
The Camera app is really basic as well, with a photo mode, panorama mode, and video mode. There’s even built-in face detection. The UI is a lot cleaner than most Android cameras, and the settings menu has a whole bunch of options to tweak, even built-in color effects. Camera shot-to-shot time is about 2-3 seconds, and there is the bit of shutter lag every so often, depending on the scenario.
As you can imagine, camera quality is just barely average. For that price range, you cant really expect much. As long as the object you’re taking a picture of isnt too close, or too far, the fixed-focus camera does an okay job. Dont even dream about getting ‘macro’ close up shots with this thing.
Apps : The Nokia X was not made to compete with the best out there. It is the exact opposite of a flagship - low-cost hardware delivering reasonable performance at a bargain price. No Google services but Nokia's and Microsoft's instead. No Google Play Store but plenty of Android apps in the Nokia and other stores. No Android level of customization but a blend of Lumia and Asha simplicity. It's Android like you never seen it before.
