"Email Miles" an app to calculate physical distance travelled by your massage

Email Miles is new system that aims to showcase how many physical miles has an email travelled before it reaches its destination. When an email is sent, the location of the server sending the message is tagged into the code of the mail. Email Miles scans an email for this so-called Geolocation tag. Every time an email is received by a new server, the new location tag is added to the email.

"Email Miles is a programme you download which then works to show the miles your emails travel, it would remind people how quickly they can communicate in a digital world", said Jonah Brucker-Cohen the creator of Email Miles. 

“Email Miles is both a free and open source plug-in for standard email software such as Apple’s Mail and Gmail that scans outgoing emails and their destination servers for their Geolocation, calculates the distance in miles and countries and continents the mail has traveled and tags each incoming email with this info”, reads the FundAnything page of the Email Miles project.

The system also shows how indirect the route of many emails can be. By giving an example Senegal demonstrates how the system works. Suppose an email sent from New York to Dakar, it first travelled 790 miles (1,271 km) to a server in Chicago, Illinois, and then went 2,163 miles (3,481 km) to Mountain View, California; 1,699 miles (2,734 km) to Dallas, Texas; 4,745 miles (7,636 km) to London; and finally 2,718 miles (4,374 km) to its destination – some 12,115 miles (19,497 km) in all.
