Microsoft may bring Android apps on Windows Phone

Windows and Windows Phone users might soon be able to run Android apps, if a new report is to be believed. According to the report of The Verge ,  the company is seriously debating if it should allow Android apps inside the Windows and Windows Phone Stores. However, some inside the company are not in favour of a rival platform making inroads and believe that this could harm the Windows Phone platform.

Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company is seriously considering allowing Android apps to run on both Windows and Windows Phone. While planning is ongoing and it's still early, we’re told that some inside Microsoft favor the idea of simply enabling Android apps inside its Windows and Windows Phone Stores, while others believe it could lead to the death of the Windows platform altogether. The mixed (and strong) feelings internally highlight that Microsoft will need to be careful with any radical move.

The report notes that, "Android is the mobile equivalent of Windows on desktop PCs - it's everywhere." Further, the report claims that app developers are more inclined towards iOS platform for building new apps, though Android has emerged as a successful smartphone platform for apps, which Microsoft has failed to achieve till now with Windows Phone.

For Microsoft, to bring Android apps to Windows Phone 8 and Windows does sound like a tough decision to take. But there’s no denying that where apps are concerned, Microsoft and Windows have a long way to catch up. Given that close to 80 percent of smartphones today run Android, with Apple’s iOS being the second most used software, for app developers Android and iOS apps are the number one priority.
