Gionee launches Elife S5.5, world's thinnest mobile phone

Chinese handset manufacturer Gionee has launched Elife S5.5 smartphone as world's slimmest smartphone. The Elife S5.5 has arrived, and it’s claimed as one of the world’s thinnest with a magnesium alloy frame that’s only 5.5mm thick. This slimness is enabled with a display module that’s only 0.5mm thick and a 0.40mm thick back cover, and we have to say the images of the phone show a very attractive looking handset.

Acccording to the news of Gigmodo, William Lu, President of Gionee says, "We believe smartphones are both consumer electronic products and decorative artworks. A new approach with a focus in design is needed. We explored the design aesthetic of the smartphone from the standpoint of the fashion origins, emphasizing smartphones as a stylish identity for end users. The ELIFE S5.5 is crafted with a distinct metallic frame and Corning Gorillas Glass Uni-Body. It uses the world's thinnest AMOLED Screen, thinnest PCB board with a 0.6MM and 0.4mm glass rear cover."

To this, Arvind.R.Vohra, India Head - Gionee Smartphones adds, "Gionee ELIFE S Series will focus primarily of design and style moving forward from its predecessor ELIFE E series that focused on camera and build quality. ELIFE E7 has witnessed an unprecedented popularity in India within a month of its launch and we believe that the S series will add another dimension to our portfolio".

The smartphone will runs the company's Amigo UI on top of Android. The Gionee Elife S5.5 features a 5-inch display with no word on its resolution and display quality. The Elife S5.5 is powered by a 1.7GHz quad-core CPU paired with 2GB of RAM. The camera options of the handset include a 13-megapixel rear shooter and a 5-megapixel front camera for video calls.

The 3G model of Elife S5.5 is up for pre-order in China, and will be launched in 40 more countries globally. As of now there is no word on the India price of Gionee Elife S5.5 but in China it is available for $370 (approx). It will be displayed at MWC 2014.
