Amazon acquires 'Killer Instinct' developer Double Helix Games

Amazon has acquired game studio Double Helix, the maker of the Xbox One exclusive game Killer Instinct.

"Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers," , the company confirmed to Pocket-lint.

Details of the acquisition are unknown though it has been said that Double Helix's employees will continue to work in Orange County but under Amazon's supervision. This business move could mean an eventual game console, or it could simply mean an eventual rain of games with Amazon's name slapped on top.

According to a report by TechCrunch, news of the purchase got first exposed in the form of an invite to a joint recruiting event by Amazon and Double Helix scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on February 13th. The two companies are planning to make the acquisition announcement on that day, the report said.

Double Helix was formed when developers Shiny Entertainment — the creators of the Earthworm Jim games — and The Collective, who made Mark Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure, were merged by parent company Foundation 9 Entertainment.

It's currently unclear whether the studio, as originally planned, will continue to support Killer Instinct with the release of new characters and content on Microsoft's new console.

Besides ‘Killer Instinct’—its most popular game today, Double Helix has created a number of PC and console games including ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’, ‘Green Latern: Rise of the Manhunters’, ‘Silent Hill: Homecoming’, and ‘Front Mission Evolved’, among others.
