Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Review and Specification

It’s really surprising how many people actually ended up using the Tab 2 7.0 as their primary phone. What sounded (and still does) like a ridiculous idea a year ago is soon changing as Sony’s Z Ultra blurred the line between tablets and phones even further. With the surge of budget tablets with calling functions hitting its peak towards the beginning of this year, the big boys had no choice but to follow this trend. Today, we have the third iteration of the Galaxy Tab 7-inch with a few nips and tucks to give it a younger look. Launched at the same price as the older Tab 2, which has been phased out, let’s see if the facelift is just cosmetic or something more.

Design

Galaxy Tab 3 has a design that is neat and functional. The rounded edges and a slim profile make holding and using the device effortless. Tab 3 -- with 311 in its name -- is different from Tab 3 that has 211 in its name. Unlike the 211 that has a 7-inch screen, the 311 uses an 8-inch screen. The quality of screen is also better. We found the screen on Tab 3 (311) to be very good. It shows rich and deep colours. And though it lacks a FullHD resolution, we found that 1280x800 pixels make the screen sharp enough to display crisp and clear text while web browsing. The viewing angles are fantastic, which means the colours don't change or shift when you tilt or move your head while using the device. During outdoor use, Tab 3 screen offers enough brightness to negate the effect of sunlight. Unfortunately, the auto brightness settings are too conservative and you will have to set brightness manually to make the screen more legible if you are using it under sunlight.

Screen

As its name suggests, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 has a 7-inch screen. In one respect it’s pretty good – viewing angles are solid – but in most other respects it is poor. Resolution is very low. It’s a 1,024 x 600 pixel display, with pixel density of 169ppi. That’s far, far lower than the new Nexus 7’s 323ppi. It’s also lower than the 1,280 x 800 pixel density of the first Nexus 7 and the cheaper Asus MeMO Pad 7 HD. To really show up how poor the screen resolution of the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is – it’s the same resolution as the original Galaxy Tab that was released three years ago. Given the amount of tech development that has happened over the last three years, continuing to use such a low resolution in 2013 is borderline unacceptable. There’s obvious pixellation, no matter what you’re doing.

Feature

The Tab 3 comes with Jelly Bean out-of-the-box (4.1.2) and Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. The usual suite of apps is present as well right from Samsung Link, S Voice, Samsung Apps, Group Play to their awesome video player which supports all popular formats. The display is fairly bright but the low resolution causes text and icons to appear choppy. The sensitivity is not very good either as it tends to skip some inputs intermittently. Despite having Jelly Bean and 1GB RAM, the UI can get really laggy to a point where everything just freezes up for seconds before you can resume what you were doing.
