Audi A3 1.6 TDI Ultra the most-efficient car of Audi
Audi has announced plans to offer a variety of eco-friendly "ultra" models that have low fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.
The mega-frugal 2014 Audi A3 1.6 TDI Ultra debuted on Monday in Germany, but plans for a U.S. introduction are sketchy.
Audi AG says the A3 1.6 TDI Ultra returns the equivalent of 74 mpg on the U.S. driving cycle, while the car's base price in Germany will be 25,200 Euros or the U.S. equivalent of $33,404.
Audi describes its first-ever Ultra-trim model as "the brand's most fuel-efficient production model." It goes on sale in Germany in September.
"The Ultra designation expresses the brand's all-encompassing commitment to systematic sustainability concerning production and products," said Audi AG in a statement.
The first model, the A3 1.6 TDI ultra, is described as the brand's most fuel-efficient production model. It is available as a three- or five door hatchback and features S line side skirts, a 15mm reduced ride height, a longer final drive ratio and 16-inch wheels with low-rolling resistance tires.
Until the next-generation E-tron and G-tron vehicles arrive, the Audi A3 1.6 TDI Ultra (yes, "Ultra" is part of the name) wins the brand's mpg crown with a fuel efficiency rating of 3.2 liters per 100 kilometers (73.5 miles per gallon). As that European format should give away, this is a rating based on the European scale, which results in higher numbers than the EPA's test does in the US. Still, Audi says the real-world cruising range is a bladder-challenging 932.06 miles from its 50-liter (13.21 US gallons) tank. Yes, that .06 is important, apparently.
Besides the high efficiency numbers, the A3 1.6 TDI Ultra has a top speed of 124 miles per hour and scoots to 62 mph in 10.5 seconds.
