After Steve Ballmer Satya Nadella may head of the Microsoft

Microsoft is starting a formal search process for its next CEO, following the news that Steve Ballmer will be retiring from that role within the next 12 months.

According to the reports, Hyderabad-born Satya Nadella, who heads Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise group, is one of the two Indians in the race to become the first non-American chief executive officer of Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker.

The other Indian is former Microsoft employee Vivek ‘Vic’ Gundotra, who is currently senior vice-president, engineering, for Google Inc.

Gundotra is considered to be the key officer of the search giant’s mobile phone and social initiatives.

Previously, Nadella was president of Microsoft's $19 billion Server and Tools Business and led the transformation of the business and technology from client-server software to cloud infrastructure and services. His prior roles include senior vice president of R&D for the Online Services Division and vice president of the Microsoft Business Division.

Before joining Microsoft in 1992, Nadella was a member of the technology staff at Sun Microsystems. A native of Hyderabad, India, Nadella earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Mangalore University, a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.

Apart from Nadella, there are others too in the fray. The following is a list of executives Reuters said Microsoft is considering:
  • Tony Bates
  • Terry Myerson
  • Kevin Turner
  • Steven Sinofsky
  • Vic Gundotra
  • Reed Hastings
  • Paul Maritz
  • Bill Gates
