Microsoft testing robotic security guards at its Silicon Valley campus

Microsoft is in the news again by beefing up its Silicon Valley Complex with few Hollywood sci-fi thriller kind of robotic security guards by Knightscope. Sounds really safe, isn’t it?

These robots weigh 136 kgs and measure 1.5 m in terms of height. These robots have become popular not only in the Silicon Valley, but also on the tech world now. According to the makers, these robots are more than capable to do tasks that their human counterparts would do.

The K5 robots will only be using sirens and alarms and have been equipped with advanced cameras for monitoring any activity in the area.

The robots make use of lasers, sensors and many cameras mounted on them. The robots are capable of reading license plates of vehicles and check them against database. If there is any usual activity, the robotic security guard K5 will report it to a supervisor.

The robots use Wi-Fi to share live videos with the control station. Additionally, the robot can also track other K5 robots in the region. The robot has the ability to track and analyze faces as well.

The K5 can run for up to 24 hours on a single charge, and can recharge in only about 20 minutes. Its battery won’t die out in the field, though—these bots will return to the charging station by themselves when their batteries start to run dry.
